You don’t have to travel to Milan or Florence for a taste of Italian culture and design. After all, South Philadelphia—who am I kidding? South Philly—has a large Italian-American community. The Philadelphia Water Department recognized this sizable subset of the population and in response created this idyllic backyard setting.

Not only is it beautiful, but it’s environmentally progressive, too. Joe Vettrone of PWD showed me the rain garden, rain barrels, and pervious concrete that make this space very cutting edge.
