We’ll Stop the World and Melt with You

It’s a little chilly in Philadelphia. Nevermind the weather, more than 20 designers are gathered to build “icy” portions of Schaffer Designs’ exhibit for the Flower Show called, “Polar Fantasy.”

“The idea of putting floral objects and floral representations into an environment that does not naturally have flowers is exciting,” Head designer Bill Schaffer told us recently. “So we are doing white on white on white.”

Bill Schaffer AIFD, AAF, PFCI, and Chris Kainenberg from Wish Painting and Sculpture, standing inside the beginning of a massive steel structure that will be hung in the air and magically transformed into an ice cave where stalactites and stalagmites will be suspended above the crowds.

Schaffer is building an “ice-cave” filled with stalagmites and stalactites. The cave, filled with nearly 4,000 white dendrobium orchids, will rest on a steel structure draped with white material.

His second feature will be a steel “ice shelf” clad with a pool dripping with floral objects in “melting ice.” The area will also be filled nearly 100 frosty vases spilling with 100 white phaleonopsis orchids and other white florals (think Superman’s Fortress of Solitude!).

The exhibit will also include peek through ice-block walls and a snow-covered floor with hundreds of white calla lilies woven through the design to add to the icy, snow-filled experience.

We are melting just thinking about it!
