Girl Scouts to Receive New PHS Greening Patch at Flower Show

More than 60 Girls Scouts who have completed the new PHS patch program, “Planting Seeds, Growing Lives: Grow, Explore, Lead,” will be honored at a special ceremony on Girl Scout Day – Sunday, March 7 – at the 2010 International Flower Show. The program will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Room 107 in the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Girl Scouts who have been engaged in projects in keeping with the PHS program will receive a voucher for the patch and a special token of their dedication to preserving the natural environment.

Speakers at the program will be Patricia James, director of the PHS Education Department, a former Girl Scout; Judy Spires, president of ACME Markets Inc., who was the recipient of the Girl Scouts’ Juliette Gordon Low Leadership Award for extraordinary vision and impact; and Barbara Hill, interim CEO of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Girl Scouts from throughout eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and even a group from Florida will participate in the Girl Scout Day program. A highlight of the day will be a performance of Indian dance by Lehigh Valley Girl Scout Avani Dalal.

The PHS patch program encourages Girl Scouts to conduct greening projects and discover the natural environments of their own communities. Through educational and hands-on activities and interactive sessions, girls plan projects while learning about planting and caring for vegetables, flowers and trees. The Girl Scouts work in teams to improve open spaces with a goal to become green leaders in their neighborhoods.

There will be no admission charge for anyone who wants to attend the Girl Scout Day event in Room 107.

Girl Scouts who come in uniform will be admitted to the Flower Show, “Passport to the World,” on that day at half-price ($7). Adult tickets are $26 on March 7, students (ages 17-24) $18.
