Are you excited for Flower Show Week? We sure are!

One event to look forward to is the Window Decorating Contest. More than 50 businesses in Philadelphia and beyond have adorned their windows with “Hawaii: Islands of Aloha” decorations.

A panel of judges will choose winners in categories ranging from “Most Creative” to “Best Interpretation of Flower Show Theme.” The awards will be presented on Friday, March 2 at the Convention Center.

But in the era of “American Idol,” we think your opinions matter just as much as those of the expert judges. You can help determine the winner of the “Crowd Favorite” category by following some simple steps.

First, become a fan of the Flower Show Facebook page and check out the Window Decorating Contest photo album. The album contains one photo from each participant. Browse through the many submissions and vote for those you think are tops by hitting the “like” button. The photo with the most “likes” will be awarded “Crowd Favorite.”

If your goal is to see these windows in person, we’ve prepared an interactive map to help you hop from window to window all over town.

Nominate Your Favorite Green Space!

June 10, 2011

Community green spaces come in many shapes and sizes. Parks, train stations, churches, schoolyards, traffic islands, and so on make a neighborhood welcoming and attractive.

Every summer PHS recognizes these green spaces and the people who care for them through the Community Greening Award. If you contribute to such a garden, park, or planting—nominate it! PHS is accepting nominations through July 15. Individuals can submit nominations as can garden clubs, civic associations, businesses, municipalities, and community groups. Enter the City Gardens Contest!

June 8, 2011

1-2-3-4, we declare a hort war!

The City Gardens Contest is back for its 37th year. And while it is more of a friendly competition than a war, PHS expects hundreds of Philadelphia residents to participate and showcase their imaginative gardening skills.

From tiny tucked-away spaces to larger neighborhood parks and farms, the City Gardens Contest celebrates all types of urban gardens by allowing participants to compete in one of nine categories. To enter your garden, please fill out an online form by June 10.

Judges will visit the gardens and pick their favorites. Photos of the winning gardens will be showcased at the Awards Reception, where the best of the best will receive praise for their wonderful work.

PHS Pops Up: Enter the Carousel Contest

May 20, 2011

As you may have seen on Facebook, the carousel animals from the 2011 Flower Show are making an encore appearance this summer on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Nine creatures – animals, insects and other whimsical beasts brought to life with plant materials – were installed around Logan Square as part of today’s City in Bloom event.

PHS prez Drew Becher says, “The installation of the carousel animals is the first in a series of “PHS Pops Up” events that will transform sites around the city, and surprise and inspire residents and visitors.”

Now that the animals are settled in, it seems only fitting that we honor them with names. Simply suggest clever, creative names for our magnificent menagerie, and you’ll be entered to win a fabulous prize from Meadowbrook Farm. You can also vote for your favorite. Click here to enter the Carousel Contest!

Kids are invited to get in on the fun, too! PHS wants budding artists (ages 4 – 15) to submit drawings and doodles of the carousel animals. Drew Becher and Flower Show designer Sam Lemheney will select three winners and those young people will win a prize (and have their artwork displayed in the PHS McLean Library). Paints, markers, crayons, charcoal–anything goes! Send entries to PHS Carousel Contest, 100 N. 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

And keep looking for PHS to “pop up” across the city!
