Schaffer Designs Creates Constitutional Display

September 21, 2012

As headquarters of the Constitution’s landmark 225th anniversary, the National Constitution Center had a lineup of celebratory events in September that included a floral art pop up by Bill Schaffer (AAF, AIFD, PFCI) and Kristine Kratt (AIFD, PFCI) of Schaffer Designs, three-time “Best in Show” winners at the Philadelphia International Flower Show.

This sculptural piece was assembled on the Center’s front lawn on September 17 and incorporated 80 stars submitted by top floral designers from 46 states, Puerto Rico, and the United Kingdom. The stars, which many of the designers made using materials indigenous to their respective states, were hung along with large, monochromatic spheres that had been covered with red or white carnations, white larkspur, stock, and hydrangeas.

Christian Kanienberg, a sculptor and mural artist from Wilmington, built the 12- by 16-foot steel canopy to display the bouquet and Delaware Valley Wholesale Florist donated the flowers. Bill, Kristine, and their crew of volunteers began their creation at 5:30 am and because of National Park Service rules, had to dismantle it by sundown the same day!

Join us in not only celebrating the anniversary of the Constitution, but also in congratulating Bill and Kristine on their success, their vision, and for their dedication to such a special project!

Macy’s Flower Show Features Some of Our Favorite Designers

March 27, 2012

We’ve barely caught our collective breath after a trip to Hawaii during this year’s Flower Show, and now Macy’s invites us to another exotic locale during their show, “Brasil: Gardens in Paradise,” March 25 through April 7 during store hours at the City Center location.

Celebrated at Macy’s in New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, the show features a variety of activities for the entire family, including organ concerts; floral, tabletop, and cooking demonstrations; guided tours; and more. Also featured is the “Bouquet of the Day,” where local designers create floral masterpieces within the store.

You’ll recognize these participating artists from the Philadelphia Flower Show: Jamie Rothstein, Jamie Rothstein Distinctive Floral Designs (March 25-26); Michael Bruce, Michael Bruce Florist (March 27-28); Donna O’Brien, Beautiful Blooms (March 29-31); Barb King, Valley Forge Flowers (April 1-2); Eric Schellack, Robertson’s Flowers (April 3-4); and Bill Schaffer, Schaffer Designs (April 5-7).

Remember, no passport is required to experience the lush, vibrant South American plants and flowers as interpreted by some of Philadelphia’s most-recognized floral designers. Enjoy!

Schaffer Sparkles with Hollywood Scenes

March 7, 2011

Movie buffs will fall in love with Schaffer Designs homage to the classic film “An American in Paris,” which is now celebrating its 60th anniversary. Bill Schaffer has created a 360-degree diorama of famous scenes from the movie musical, and has infused it with incredible floral creations.

Remember the lavish dance sequence by the fountain? Bill’s interpretation is seen here with 2,500-some stems from Japan, including some that have never been exhibited in the U.S. before. Other magical moments recreated for Flower Show guests include the carnival scene, the stairway lined with glamorous dancing girls, and—of course—the can-can dance.

Bill says, “We want to give the view from the director’s chair and share with people the spectacle of putting on a Show!” Bravo, Schaffer Designs (4403 Richmond St. Philadelphia, PA 19137)!

Schaffer Creates Movie Magic for Flower Show

February 9, 2011

An undersea mermaid hideaway. An ice-cold polar playground. As his past Flower Show exhibits prove, Bill Schaffer of Schaffer Designs doesn’t back down from a creative challenge. For the upcoming Show—less than a month away!—Bill will take on the silver screen as he and his team pay tribute to the film “An American in Paris.”

A series of vignettes will recreate some of the movie-musical’s most memorable scenes. If you’ve never seen this Academy Award winning classic, make plans to view it in the next few weeks; consider it your Flower Show homework.

Follow the preparations online by frequenting the Schaffer Designs blog. And best of luck to the 30+ person team (including carpenters, electricians, dock workers, and more) who are bringing Hollywood and Paris to the Show!

It’s a little chilly in Philadelphia. Nevermind the weather, more than 20 designers are gathered to build “icy” portions of Schaffer Designs’ exhibit for the Flower Show called, “Polar Fantasy.”

“The idea of putting floral objects and floral representations into an environment that does not naturally have flowers is exciting,” Head designer Bill Schaffer told us recently. “So we are doing white on white on white.”
