Show Sponsors’ Exhibits Anchor the Show

While we’re still basking in the Flower Show afterglow, we want to take a moment to thank our sponsors, some of which had exhibits at this year’s Show. Each one was a crowd-pleaser, and we look forward to what they bring next year.

Tourism Ireland first graced the exhibit floor in 2007 when the Show’s theme was “Legends of Ireland,” and they’ve been a much-loved exhibitor ever since. This year, they won the award for “Best Achievement in Creating a Natural Landscape (non-Hawaiian).”

The plant list featured a warm palette of bright red salvia, yellow primrose, and coral azalea, all set against a background of lush boxwood. The rich heritage of the Emerald Isle was reflected in some the iconic symbols scattered throughout the landscape, which was titled “Classic Ireland with a Twist.”

Vastly different but equally enjoyable was the EP Henry exhibit, which celebrated family vacations by building a tropical Hawaiian retreat. Surrounded by soaring palms and tropical gardens, a cabana served as the party hub with its built-in grill and bar made from a surfboard.

Environmentally friendly Eco Pavers formed a patio for lounging, and the plunge pool was the perfect spot for taking a dip. The tableau was completed with a wading pool, secluded outdoor shower, and an al fresco dining area. Now that you’ve seen what EP Henry can do inside the Convention Center, imagine the possibilities for your own property.

Across a walkway from EP Henry, Subaru created “The Surf Shack,” a fun getaway where you can rent a board, ride the waves, and soak up the sun! The display invited viewers to imagine being transported to a little piece of paradise in a Subaru Outback. With a jaunty thatched-roof hut and plenty of tropical fruits for snacking, this little slice of the islands was all about fun.

There were at least five Subarus throughout the Show; some were fun, vintage varieties, others were impressive new models. Subaru loves gardeners and gardeners love Subaru, so the Flower Show partnership for the past 11 years has been a perfect match!

Sponsors Shine at the Flower Show

Each year some of the Flower Show’s corporate sponsors create memorable exhibits for the delight of our many guests. Luckily, we were able to steal their talented designers for a few moments to get an exclusive walk-through of their exquisite exhibits. With a little background information, you’ll have an even better appreciation of their beauty.

First up, Joe Palimeno, landscape designer with Ledden Palimeno Design Build Co. He describes EP Henry’s Dinner and a Movie showcase as a way to “display the indoors, out.”  A backyard porch, covered in tall plants and blooming flowers, will be portrayed in both the daytime and night.  During the daytime, the exhibit plays cheery music while a 10-foot rain curtain spills water into a serene backyard-spa.  As the evening approaches, colored lights illuminate the trees while a favorite Paris-inspired film plays. Wait until you see it!

Joe also worked with Subaru on their Day in the Park exhibit.  Walls adorned with  plants line a driveway that leads to a hot air balloon ride.  Be sure to check out this showcase, and the shiny, sleek Subaru vehicle parked there!

Nearby, PNC’s exhibit For the Birds, is an “artistic statement with found birdhouses,” in the words of Michael Petrie of Petrie’s Handmade Gardens.  When Michael came across these birdhouses in New Jersey, he was inspired to create a tall, whimsical arch.  Built with stacked orchard crates, this creative walk-through is the perfect tribute to PNC, which has sponsored the Flower Show for the past 20 years. Take a trip back in time and admire the Flower Show posters from the past two decades.

Take a Green Tour at the Flower Show

The Philadelphia International Flower Show is an opportunity to learn how to protect the environment and play a part in sustaining its natural resources.

As principal fundraiser for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the Flower Show generates $1 million in revenues for its nationally renowned urban revitalization program, Philadelphia Green.

Visitors can learn about some of Philadelphia Green’s key initiatives, such as its entrepreneurial City Harvest effort, at the PHS Village display. City Harvest is a partnership with the prison system, community gardeners and food cupboard operators dedicated to ensuring fresh produce for under-served communities and nurturing urban agriculture in the region.

PNC Bank, the Presenting Sponsor of the 2010 Philadelphia International Flower Show, will express its environmental message with a 16-foot-high by 20-foot-wide “living wall” of plants and recycled materials.
